The carefully articulated Victorian building on Church Street takes up one half of an entire old Birmingham city block. It was purpose designed and built to accommodate the Birmingham and District Eye Hospital.
Several developers had pursued Birmingham City Council to alter and extend this beautiful building to insert office and other commercial uses. Other well-known hotel groups had reviewed the structure for alteration to their particular hotel style and had plans rejected in this regard.
Once again, we broke the rules and divested ourselves
of preconceived hotel taboos, to create the Hotel du Vin Birmingham. In doing so we won the 2002 BDI Award for rescuing the building.
