The Old Sugar House had been derelict and neglected for sixteen years in 1998 when it was discovered. It was at the top of the English Heritage ‘At Risk’ list and had been spot listed to protect it from the bulldozer. Perversely, the spot listing was so severe that several previous design schemes and planning applications had been rejected as they would have altered the fabric of the building too radically. Our hotel design was based upon the adaptation of a boutique hotel operation to the rather ad-hoc mix of structures rather than the adaptation of the structures to the function we wanted to insert. As such, we broke several hotel operational rules and carried out the lightest touch possible to the buildings which resulted in 2002 Civic Trust Award.
